3. LE PASSÉ COMPOSÉ
The passé composé expresses an action begun
and completed at a specific time in the past.
The passé composé may be translated into
English in three different ways depending
on the context.
French: Jean a mangé toute la viande!
English: Jean ate all the meat!
Jean has eaten all the meat!
Jean did eat all the meat!
4. Formation of passé composé with the verb
Avoir
the passé composé is composed of two elements: the
present tense of an auxiliary verb (either avoir or être),
followed by a past participle:

6. The verb avoir is employed in the present tense as follow:

Elle a = she has

Elles ont = they have (fem.plur.)

8. Formation of the past participle of regular verbs in Er,
ir, and Re. La formation du participle passé des verbes en er, ir, et re.
For regular verbs with an infinitive ending in er , the
past participle is formed by replacing the final -er of
the infinitive with -é.

Negation of the passé composé is
formed by placing ne ... pas around
the conjugated verb, which, in this
case, is the auxiliary avoir.
• Jean n’a pas mangé toute la viande!.
